EU trade, transport, tourism and economic development are directly dependent on open and safe seas and oceans. EU's maritime borders are widely spread including various topologies from open sea to semi-enclosed cabins with islands and islets. This poses great challenges that affect securing maritime border areas.
The most important contribution of RANGER is that it will enable detection and tracking of small vessels over a distance of approximately 150 Nm – this is a significant progress in accuracy (position and number of detected targets) in comparison to current state. This new development improves drastically the response and intervention capacity of European Search and Rescue services and reduces the expected number of casualties in the Mediterranean basin, whether it is the Greek archipelago, the southern Atlantic or the open seas of Italy and France.
