European population is aging and poor baseline health condition of adult population is expected to continue. The impact of these societal facts is increasingly being borne by employers in terms of both direct healthcare costs and indirect productivity loss costs.
WorkingAge (WA) envisages the use of innovative Human Computer Interaction (HCI) methods, such as augmented reality, virtual reality, gesture and voice recognition to measure users’ psychological, emotional and health state in a secure and ethical manner and by respecting their privacy. It also aspires to use Internet of Things (IoT) to track environmental conditions that might affect the user. WA aims at promoting users’ healthy habits in their working environment and at improving their working and living conditions.
In order to achieve its goals, WA applies:
  • Ergonomic Studies of the Users: Computer Vision and Deep Learning will be used in order to create a 3D pose recognition system from a single camera utilisable in real work environments.
  • Gesture-Based Recognitions: Existing GBR methods will be enhanced to make use of accelerometers embedded in wearable devices to recognise simple user gestures and open libraries for touch/touchless gesture recognition.
  • Prediction of Facial Action Units & Expressions: A camera will be integrated into the WA sensor platform to detect facial action of users in real time.
  • Conversation Agent Back-End: A conversational agent will be developed based on users’ needs and then will be extensively tested.
  • IoT: Existing IoT technology will be enhanced with additional features, services, sensors and data stream.
  • Recognition of Stressful States: A light, portable device will be developed with minimal number of sensors to return information regarding stress and distraction levels as well as employees’ mental strain in real time.
  • Location Systems: A smartphone application will be developed to render worker’s location trackable and upload relevant geolocation on the WA cloud.
  • Connection to E112 Stakeholder: The WA app will initialise the emergency E122 call for emergency situations detected by sensors.

WA will have significant impact on several areas. More specifically, WA will:

  • Contribute to independent living and quality of life of older people, enabling them to stay actively involved in work life for longer or to return to work after sever disease

  • Enhance health and safety working conditions, enabling employees to remain productive for a longer period of time

  • Increase user acceptance concerning Human Computer Interaction (HCI), showcasing user-centred design

  • Reduce health treatment-related costs due to enhanced self-care, life-style, age-friendly and skills conductive work environments

  • Provide a competitive advantage to the European industry through flexible and sustainable work arrangements for aged workforce

  • Lead to global leadership in ICT (Information Communication Technology)-based innovation for active and healthy ageing including the occupational environment
